EMDR Intensives Worth It?|Near Boston & NYC

EMDR intensives are extended therapy sessions designed to help you process trauma, anxiety, and relationship patterns more quickly than weekly therapy.

You might be here because something isn’t shifting. You’ve done years of therapy to understand your patterns. You know yourself well and can name where things come from. But anxiety still shows up. Burnout creeps back in. The same relationship dynamics keep repeating.

Insight can only take you so far. Now you’re looking for a way to actually process and change what’s underneath.

That’s where EMDR intensives can help.

What Are EMDR Intensives?

EMDR intensives are longer, focused therapy sessions. Instead of meeting for 50 minutes each week, you set aside a larger block of time, from 3–5 hours a day over multiple days, to do deeper work.

With Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), an evidence-based, somatic trauma therapy, we help your brain and body process experiences that are still getting activated in the present. You may not define what happened to you as trauma; that’s okay. We work with whatever experiences you’ve had that were distressing and overwhelmed your ability to cope. Whether it’s feeling unsafe, alone, or unworthy, these are the moments we help your brain and nervous system process so you can connect with your strengths and resilience.

Are EMDR Intensives Worth It?

For many people, they are.

Especially for my clients who feel like they’ve been circling the same issues for a long time. They may notice that they can explain your patterns clearly, but that understanding hasn’t translated into change. It feels intellectual rather than embodied.

EMDR intensives create the conditions for something to actually shift. With the right conditions, your brain and nervous system know how to heal. The longer sessions allow your system to feel safe enough to stay engaged, to take our time to make shifts as needed, and to find closure instead of stopping right when things start to open up.

This can lead to movement that feels deeper, more direct, and less drawn out over time. We can achieve similar results of 6 months worth of therapy in 3 days.

Why Weekly Therapy Can Feel Slow

Weekly therapy has its place. It can be supportive, steady, and grounding.

At the same time, it can be hard to build momentum in short sessions. Plus, it is hard to fully settle in a session when you know moments later you have to return to the demands of daily life.

You might recognize this:

  • Feeling it’s hard to focus without the worries of your present daily stressors getting in the way

  • Spending part of each session catching up

  • Getting close to something important, then running out of time

  • Losing the thread between sessions or having new crises that pop up and distract you from processing trauma

  • Feeling like you understand the problem but still react the same way

This is often the case for people who are used to thinking their way through things or staying in control.

Intensives make space for a different kind of work. There’s time to stay with what comes up and move through it without interruption. Stepping away from the stressors of daily life gives you space to fully focus on your healing.

What to Expect During an EMDR Intensive

If you’re considering an EMDR intensive in the Berkshires, it helps to know how the process is structured.

Before your intensive

We spend time getting clear on what you want to focus on. We’ll meet for a goal-setting session, either virtually or in-person. We’ll identify patterns, map out targets or distressing memories you’d like to work on, and start building tools to help you stay grounded.

During your intensive

Intensive sessions are 3–5 hours with plenty of breaks and time for learning resourcing or coping skills to help with nervous system regulation

We focus on:

  • The experiences connected to your current struggles; what are the symptoms you want to change and what are the experiences connected to those symptoms?

  • Processing those distressing experiences using EMDR and other somatic practices like parts work (IFS)

  • Moving at a pace that feels steady and manageable; we never move faster than what feels safe to you

  • We integrate any elements that feel helpful to you such as somatic exercises, expressive arts therapy approaches, or mindful outdoor walks

There’s no pressure to push past your limits. The goal is to create enough space and safety for your system to do what it hasn’t been able to do in shorter sessions.

After your intensive

Integration continues after the work is done.

Some people notice:

  • Less reactivity in situations that used to feel overwhelming

  • More clarity in relationships

  • A sense of relief or internal shift

Who EMDR Intensives Are For

This approach tends to resonate with people who carry a lot internally.

You might:

  • Feel anxious or stuck in “overdrive” even when things look fine on the outside

  • Take on more than your share in relationships and have difficulty knowing what they want

  • Struggle to set boundaries without guilt

  • Feel emotionally exhausted or burned out

  • Notice patterns in dating or partnerships that don’t change

There’s often a sense of being capable and self-aware, but still stuck in the same loops.

When EMDR Intensives May Not Be the Right Fit

This format isn’t for everyone.

It may not be the best option if you’re in a place where you need immediate stabilization or ongoing, frequent support. It also may not feel right if you prefer a slower pace or aren’t ready to engage more deeply with what’s coming up.

We can talk through this in your consultation to understand if an intensive is right for you

Why Work in the Berkshires

The setting can make a difference. The Berkshires are one of the most beautiful places on the planet (in my opinion).

Many people choose to do intensives in the Berkshires because it offers space to step out of daily routines. I can help you arrange supportive healing sessions like acupuncture, massage, or yoga. The Berkshires also offer beautiful mountain hiking trails and a thriving arts scene.

There’s more quiet, fewer distractions, and room to focus. That alone can help your nervous system settle enough to do deeper work.

Clients often travel from Boston, New York City, and nearby areas for that reason.

A Different Pace of Healing

Some people reach a point where they don’t want to keep stretching the process out. They’re ready to work more directly with what’s been underneath everything.

EMDR intensives offer a way to do that.

Not by forcing anything, but by creating the time and structure for real processing to happen.
